Sandringham was purchased by Queen Victoria at the request of The Prince of Wales as a home for himself and his new bride, Alexandra.

Over the years, successive generations of the Royal Family have taken Sandringham to heart, enhancing the house and refining the dramatic gardens and landscaped grounds. As it stands today, it is one of the finest country homes in England and one of the few remaining country estates.

In 1952 The Duke of Edinburgh took on overall responsibility for its management and one of his founding principles was to make the Estate self sustaining and viable, so that it can be maintained for future generations.

Under his careful stewardship the Estate workers and tenant farmers have been encouraged to develop their skills and promote their expertise in the traditional farming practices that have been carried out at Sandringham over the decades.

We are passionate about our produce and take great pride in the traditional way the pastures have been farmed and the livestock has been reared, unspoilt by progress.

Every member of the team at Great Bircham is an expert in their own field, using skills and knowledge that reach back over the generations.

Our aim is to work in harmony with nature, which means we don’t have to use pesticides, herbicides, additives or preservatives and the livestock is free to graze on fresh grass. Great Bircham Foods meats are from carefully selected breeds that have the highest standard of welfare throughout their lives and are noted for their taste and texture – not simply high yields.

It may not be the modern way of farming, but quality is always the number one priority for everyone here at Sandringham.
